Antique Rocking Horses

Hilton
Large and highly collectable Ayres  rocking horse circa 1910
Beautiful original Ayres rocking horse circa 1910.
This rocking horse is shown overpainted. However on inspection it was found that the original paintwork underneath is mostly intact, so Hilton has been carefully stripped of the overpaint and is now undergoing conservation work to recover the paintwork underneath. This will be followed with a new mane and tail and set of new tack.
The stand is also getting a makeover, sanding and revarnishing. When complete, Hilton will be a beautiful fully functional rocking horse, but retaining lots of character and condition associated with an original antique.
This is a horse currently undergoing restoration, this webpage will be updated with more photographs to show his progress, which should be complete by April 2013. A purchaser expressing an interest now may be able to specify elements of the finish, such as saddlecloth, rossettes etc.

Frederick Henry Ayres was one of the leading late Victorian toy and rocking horse manufacturers. Probably second only to Lines in output, many would regard Ayres as more classic. F H Ayres was innovative with a string of interesting patents for rocking horse designs. The firm was based at 111 Aldersgate, London from 1864 until 1940, supplying most London department stores, such as Harrods as well as being widely exported. Ayres rocking horses are undoubtably the most collectable of antique rocking horses.
