Antique Rocking Horse
Rossini

A Lines bow rocking horse retailed by Gamages of London circa 1900-20.
Rossini is a delightful restored nursery bow rocker retailed by Gamages of London. Gamages retailed rocking horses from a number of makers, but Lines were probably their biggest supplier.
Nursery bows, as the term implies are suitable for the smaller child, and indeed Rossini can be so ridden. Nowadays such rocking horses are popular with collectors, especially people who also collect bears and doll's, the rocking horse making a fine prop.
Rossini had a full restoration some time ago, apart from some minor and superficial gesso cracks, and some minor distress on part of the saddle, he is in excellent condition. He has replacement leather tack and saddle, a natural horse hair blonde mane and tail and replacement rossettes and stirrups.
The bow, in a sympathetic green is sound and in good condition.

G&J Lines operated from 1850-1931 initially in the busy King's Cross area of London. They became Victorian England's largest rocking horse maker, yet maintained the highest qualities of workmanship and carving. G&J stands for the founding brothers, George and Joseph Lines

Prior to 1914 they operated five scattered workshops across London. The brackets usually have been stamped on the underside, with J&G being stamped on a slightly different model with a thicker neck to those stamped G&J.
