Antique Rocking Horses

A Shoofly style bow rocking horse

Lavender is an unusual "shoofly" type bow rocker of unknown provenance, my best guess would be German circa 1900-60. The paintwork is exceptionally fine, suggesting an earlier date. Construction is of wood board, as opposed to plywood, suggesting a pre 1930 date, with a veneer surface on both sides onto which the paintwork has been applied.
Height 22"

Length Overall 32.5"

The "shoofly rocker" originates from similar designs patented by the Jesse Crandall and others in the USA circa 1859-60. The design is easily made, so rapidly caught on in the USA and Australia, with german makers also supplying these markets.
The ease of manufacture and the large numbers of makers producing them, makes them difficult to date with any precision.
