Archie - A Relko bow rocking horse

Relko made rocking horses in Devon in the 70s and 80s using a distinctive laminate construction technique. Whilst this method does not lend itself to fine carving, their design won a Design Centre award in 1978, featuring in their brochure that year. Laminate construction uses plywood cut to shape and then sanded off to make the horse shape. Careful design has used the layered features of plywood to produce the distinctive wood finish effect of the finished rocking horse. Archie is a fine example of a Relko bow rocker. Sturdy and of sound construction, it is in exceptionally good condition. Everything is original and in good order apart from the light restoration of a re-varnish and new mane. Saddle and tack are original and in excellent condition, they are detachable for added play value. The blonde natural horse hair mane and tail is a new replacement, manes tend to lose hair over time, so Archie had a replacement with his refurbishment. The makers mark indicates he was made in 1977. Relko relocated to New Zealand in 1983, were they still seem to be trading.
