Antique Toy Stable Set

Bauer and Krause Stable Set circa 1910.

Stable sets such as this were popular toys for the middle classes up until the 1930s. Most were made in Germany by the leading toy maker of the day, Bauer and Krause. The set includes two ponies or horses, one tacked up to pull the small gig with the set, the other for riding. The horses are mounted on wheeled bases, the pulling horse having inset wheels, a feature that had died out by the 1920s, as the extra work for craftsman to do this became prohibited by the increasing competition from more mass produced toys. We would therefore date this set to circa 1910.
The stable itself includes three stalls, one for the cart and two for the ponies or horses. The latter two stalls have hay racks, feed troughs and chains to keep the horse in. The base is painted yellow, with tile flooring in the stalls simulated by a printed paper. The walls are varnished with a gold and red trim, There are decorative globes on the pillars, some missing. Overall good condition for 100 years old.
The horses are mounted on wheeled bases as mentioned. They are covered in calfskin, a very common finish on German toy horses at the time. Some wear on the rump of the pulling horse and his leatherette tack in this area is noted, otherwise both horses are in excellent condition.
The horses measure 10" in height.
Height 18"
Width 26"
Depth 16"
Bauer and Krause were a major German toy maker based in Leipzig. They produced a wide range of horse themed toys, especially for export to America up until the 1930s.
