An early F H Ayres rocking horse, circa 1890, with extra carving and head turned to the right. Original class eyes and side saddle pommel holes. Original stand and brackets.
This horse has been extensively restored by a professional restorer, comprising completely gessoed and repainted, new quality leather tack and new mane and tail. The stand has been refurbished and is in full working order.
Early extra carved horses such as this had outstanding carving, rarely matched today. As is common with antique horses there are some light gesso cracks on the joints, though of no structural significance.

Frederick Henry Ayres was one of the leading late Victorian
toy and rocking horse manufacturers. Probably second only to Lines
in output, many would regard Ayres as more classic. F H Ayres was
innovative with a string of interesting patents for rocking horse
designs. The firm was based at 111 Aldersgate, London from 1864
until 1940, supplying most London department stores, such as Harrods
as well as being widely exported. Ayres rocking horses are
undoubtably the most collectable of antique rocking horses.
