An early extra carved rocking horse by F H Ayres

A restored early antique rocking horse by F H Ayres

Wellington is a delightful early extra carved Ayres rocking horse. He bears his original stencil for the Marqua patent, dated Jan 29 1880. This was the date of the  UK patent taken out from an earlier American patent by Philip Marqua of Cincinnati.  Licensed makers used this patent and stencil until the late 1880s when the patent lapsed.
Wellington has had a full restoration, including repainting, new tack and a natural horse hair silver grey mane and tail and is in full working order.
Wellington also bears a retailers plate, Benetfink & Co of Cheapside, London.  This renowned London store traded from 1845 until 1907, when it was taken over by Gamages.

Frederick Henry Ayres was one of the leading late Victorian toy and rocking horse manufacturers. Probably second only to Lines in output, many would regard Ayres as more classic. F H Ayres was innovative with a string of interesting patents for rocking horse designs. The firm was based at 111 Aldersgate, London from 1864 until 1940, supplying most London department stores, such as Harrods as well as being widely exported. Ayres rocking horses are undoubtably the most collectable of antique rocking horses.
