A rare example of a patent spring design produced in the 1920s by Invicta Toys of Kent.
The stand is outwardly a jubilee style four poster design, but the horse is mounted on a sprung steel bracket, itself tensioned with adjustable bolts acting on a coiled spring. Although the coil spring does appear slack, it is infact helping tension the mounting bracket. The result is the distinctive additional rocking action achieved on sprung horses.
The horse itself is in need of some restoration, having been over painted in the past. The horse itself is in need of some restoration, having been over painted in the past. There are some gesso cracks, so this horse is very much a restoration project for the discerning collector who wants something distinctively different.
Invicta Toy and Doll Works Ltd of Kent, also trading as Kent Toy Works was a small firm operating from Eridge Road in Tunbridge Wells between 1919 and 1925.
They produced a range of toys, including dolls, toy trains and various types of rocking horse. This includes models mounted on a "jubilee" style frame with a spring mounting.
