Barrel horses, made from a wooden log were common vernacular horses, not only in Britain, but across the world and North America. Often they were mostly locally made as simple and relatively cheap toy horses, occassionally perhaps turned out in numbers by a small workshop. As such, they are very difficult to identify and date, though age wise they can go back into the 18th century, if not earlier.
