Original antique rocking horse by JR Smith, London.
This fine rocking horse retains much of it's originality with condition appropriate for it's age. These fine horses were produced just prior to the Great War, paintwork shows some condition, but it totally original, as is the saddle and leather work, apart from the bridle and reins. Replacement saddlecloths and mane and tail. All sound and in working order, no woodworm.
The firm of JR Smith made fine rocking horses between 1881 and 1916 in London. They distinctively placed the rocking iron brackets over the pillars, thus alleviating the need for some kind of cap or finish on these and they did not “rebat” the legs onto the side rails, relying on the tension applied by the hoof bolts to keep the leg in place.
