Stunning rocking horse with raised leg in the style of Harold Wakefield.

Blackberry is a stunning rocking horse. In fact my first thoughts was he was by the legendary Harold Wakefield, and not just any Wakefield but one of his compositions. So many things match, who else could do a raised leg so well, the quality of the carving, even the light dapple. However he has small differences, the brass moulded brackets, the unusual way the rocking irons are bent, stepping them in closer to the stand higher up, the stand itself, plus there is no marking to indicate Wakefield.

Whoever made him was almost certainly influenced by the "master" and had no reason to be shy about their workmanship. I have handled many rocking horses and rarely come across anything like this - even though Ayres, Lines and Co take some beating.

Blackberry is simply a stunning rocking horse for someone who wants something special and should be valued simply on that basis.

Although he is probably over 20 years old, he has been cherished (shouldn't he be?) and is in practically perfect condition, certainly the paintwork has only very minor scuffing on part of the right rear leg. There is a very minor gesso crack on the front left leg, apart from these he is unblemished.

Some light fading on the saddle, likewise the tack is in very good condition. The stand, sound and in full working order.

The raised leg is completely free standing on the horse, a metal rod serves to brace the body as a structural member in it's place.

At the moment I also have the impressive Pegasus standing next to him, if you love rocking horses, well worth the visit to my showroom, not to mention all the others of course.

Harold Wakefield was a rocking horse maker based in Boston, Lincs. Over a 40 year career he made possibly in excess of 500 rocking horses, but was particularly renowned for his "specials". As a trained artist he studied real horses to carve rocking horses in particular positions, raised hooves for example

He was also known for the detail and quality of his carving, particularly leaving "veining" as raised impressions on the horses neck or legs, very much as might be seen on a real horse.
